Softshell jackets are very breathable, water resistant and wind resistant and often completely windproof making them fantastic for very windy, dry days on the hill where wind chill factor needs to be kept to a minimum. Softshell jackets are very breathable, water resistant and wind resistant and often completely windproof making them fantastic for very windy, dry days on the hill where wind chill factor needs to be kept to a minimum. A softshell jacket can be worn as an outer jacket but also as a mid layer under a waterproof shell jacket as they're so breathable.
Look out for 'membraned' softshell jackets as these will have a waterproof membrane, like Gore-Tex, inside making them fully waterproof and will have all seams fully taped to stop water coming in.
